Self Assessment
In this course we learned about the different design theories. We learned about the theories as a whole and also their teaching focuses. After completing the pre assessment I find myself working through the Humanistic theory. I try to show my students how we can relate things to our own personal experiences and our lives. Since they have experienced it this would be the first step and then we work on how we can think and plan to use the concepts in our real life situations in the future. It makes me think how important I am in helping these students meet these needs and show them how important they are. The students that I see having a hard time with these theorists are those low socio-economic children who do not get to experience many things. After the pre assessment we completed a teaching style inventory. I find myself teaching rote learning and focusing on practical applications. In my classroom I use rote learning for Spelling tests and short quizzes. I feel that students will remember more if they can relate the subject to their own lives and figure out how it applies. I find myself using, my own experiences in helping my students to understand certain concepts. I use a lot of partner and group work in my classroom when it comes to discussion. I feel that the students can get more out of a discussion if there is more than one point of views. They can feed off each other’s ideas and expand more on their learning and retain the information longer.
In week 2 we started creating our online course using the “backward design” model of Wiggins and McTighe. "To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you're going so that you better understand where you are now so that the steps you take are always in the right direction" (as cited in Wiggins and McTighe, 2006, p. 1). This quote says so much in so little words, knowing what you want before you begin your journey makes your final destination mean so much more.
Learn as a Learner
It took me a little bit to get started on this project. I was not quite sure what to do and where to begin. I have always been one to just pick a lesson and go with it not really thinking about the end result. Once I started researching it more and working with "backward design", I found myself to be more at ease with what I was working with.
Lifelong Learning My future learning will be impacted by my realization that I learn better when I have anytime access to course materials so that I can learn any time (Richardson, 2007). My past interactions and collaborations with colleagues will impact my future learning experiences by giving me the opportunity to reflect and build upon what I learn in a less-formal environment, contributing to that anytime learning.
As a lifelong learner, the question of how to remain a diligent learner challenges me. It is worthy of future research because to be an effective teacher, I must remember how to learn (Burns, 2002).
